Ignoring Boundaries: Image in the Landscape

Rather than mounting a show of "images of the landscape" which normally is concerned with representing landscape, this exhibition is instead, a show of images installed in the landscape! By exhibiting media not usually associated with either sculpture or outdoor exhibition, we are attempting to redefine boundaries which normally constrain our idea of outdoor art.

The artists participating in this show use photography and reflective surfaces to generate a multitude of image types. The subtleties and power of these media, which give shape to so much of the work shown in indoor galleries and museums today, has remained largely out of the realm of work available to outdoor venues. The pieces presented for this show will take advantage of the rich context exhibiting in the landscape, yet push image production into the realm of sculpture and installation.

"Ignoring Boundaries" is a series of two shows which will take place over the next two years exploring different media and materials for landscape art. It is curated by Peter Franck and Kathleen Triem with Gregory Volk as curatorial advisor.

Participating artists include Mary Ellen Carroll, Thomas Eller, Joy Episalla and Carrie Yamaoka.

Modules explores works that are themselves made up of different "parts" or "pieces." This show engages the concept of form and composition in sculpture with individual pieces themselves being made up of separate bits or parts. In viewing these works we may consider how we can visually deconstruct and understand their physical makeup as a whole.

Artists include Mikyung Kim, Stefanie Nagorka, Donna Nield, John Powers and Gary Quinonez.

In the summer of 2001, this exhibition brought unexpected media into the landscape. The show exhibited laminated photographs, video monitors, billboards and an assortment of presentation techniques. This show garnered attention since the presentation of this media rarely is accomplished in a sculpture park setting.

"Image in the Landscape" was installed within the existing areas of the park. Specially designed signage differentiated each piece from the work which is part of the general collection. The variety of work from different specific shows and the specially curated projects formed a complex weaving of artistic intentions.
