Julian Opie initially started photographing his subject matter- people, landscapes and still lives - and then moved to digitally manipulating the photographs to construct his images by a process of elimination and distillation. Through this practice he has developed a concise and reductive formal language. Opie draws from influences as diverse as billboard signs, 18th century portraiture, popular comics and Japanese woodblock prints. He "paints" using a vast array of media and technologies, and his works have been realized in silkscreen, vinyl, LCD, LED, lenticular and flocking. He continues to push the boundaries of "traditional" artistic practice today.

Opie was born in London in 1958, studied at Goldsmith's College of Art from 1979 to 1982, and is one of the UK's best-known contemporary artists, exhibiting widely both nationally and internationally.

In 2001 Opie was awarded the Music Week CADS for Best Illustration award for his album cover design for Best of Blur. His work can be found in many public collections worldwide including the Tate Gallery in London, The Arts Council of Great Britain, The national Museum of art in Osaka, and The Museum of Modern Art in New York.

This work was included in the 2009 Summer Exhibition.
