Artist Talk: Shona McAndrew & Portia Munson
Join artists Shona McAndrew and Portia Munson for a virtual conversation on the influence of feminism and the decorative arts on their personal art practices on Wednesday, June 23rd at 6 PM. The talk is moderated by Nicole Hayes. The event is free, but advance registration is required.
Shona McAndrew: Just the three of us is on view now in the Newmark Gallery at Art Omi. This a sculptural installation consists of over 175 painted paper mache objects depicting three female friends enjoying time spent together in a room filled with objects inspired by the artist's personal space and collections. Among the issues explored by the exhibition, the viewer is asked to consider the portrayal of female bodies and friendships in Western art.
Portia Munson is well known for her installation, painting and photographic works, which explore the themes of feminism and the environment. Her exhibition Memento Mori Mandalas is currently on view throughout the grounds at Olana Historic Site in Hudson, NY. The monumental mandalas printed on silk banners celebrate the beauty of the natural world, as well as pay tribute to the creatures that have paid the price of human's harsh impact on the environment.
Join us for one or more weeks of Columbia County's most popular arts camp for preschoolers! This program is limited to eight children and two adult teachers. Artgarten occurs under a large, open-air tent with excursions throughout the Sculpture & Architecture park. Daily activities include two art projects using a variety of media, nature exploration in the sculpture and architecture park, open play, story time, and swimming as well as snack and lunch times, and morning/afternoon circle meetings. With contemporary art and architecture and the expansive natural landscape as a backdrop, sky's the limit for what we can dream up and create together!

This program engages kids ages 6-12 in a variety of creative adventures that include drawing, painting, sculpture, performance, music, nature art, and more. Through self and guided exploration, hands-on learning and making experiences, collaboration, and critical thinking, children gain new skills and confidence in the power of their own ideas. In this course we will build expressive drawing skills using the landscape and sculpture at Art Omi as reference and inspiration. Using a range of media including charcoal, pencil, ink, and pastel we will explore fundamental 2 dimensional art principles such as perspective, value, form and texture. Expanding our understanding of observational drawing, we will experiment with scale, format, and subject matter in order to find unique modes of personal expression. Our studio time will consist of quick sketches and drawing games, viewing work by contemporary and historical artists, and extended individual projects throughout the sculpture park. Materials included in tuition fee. No experience necessary! For teens age 12 - 16.
