How does an artist develop their own personal “voice”? In this course we will focus on ways to convey ideas and feelings while painting from observation by using color, expressive brushwork, and a range of techniques in paint application. Students will build fundamental skills in oil painting through explorations in color mixing, value, and composition. Daily presentations of work by contemporary painters and their studio processes will inform our goal of learning to find inspiration in the world around us. During the week, students will participate in quick studio games and exercises while also creating one or more finished oil paintings on canvas based on the landscape and sculpture at Art Omi. No prior experience is necessary. Materials included in tuition fee.
Ever Baldwin is a painter in Catskill NY. Their work has been included in solo and group exhibitions in New York, Chicago, Boston, Toronto, and Berlin. They have attended residency programs at The Ragdale Foundation, The Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild, and in 2014 received a cultural grant from The City of Chicago to attend The Atlantic Center for the Arts, where they studied with the painter Dana Schutz. Ever has worked with children, teens, and adults as a teaching artist for over ten years, and an artists’ book featuring their series of food paintings was recently published by Soberscove Press in Chicago. They hold a BFA in painting from The Maryland Institute College of Art and an MFA from The School of The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
